There is no denying that planning a wedding can be very stressful, while at the same time very rewarding. There are over priced vendors, difficult relatives and decisions to be found around every turn. We asked a handful of brides, mothers-of-the-brides, and maids-of-honor what advice they would give to avoid stress and enjoy the planning and celebration as much as possible. Here's what they came up with: Make sure you want to get married Sorry to be such a pessimist, but many couples don't even last 2 years. Some wedding jitters are normal, but if you are having nagging doubts - talk about it. It is never too late to change your life course. Don't forget - it is your wedding You will need help planning a big event, if for nothing else but moral support. However, ultimately it is your and your fiancé's day. Mother-in-laws who want to live vicariously through you and grandmothers who have wedding etiquette they want included to impress their bridge club, need to be held at an arms length. Be flexible in areas where you don't feel strongly, but stick your ground on details you care about. Don't buy your dress or your bridesmaids' dresses too early After ordering your wedding dress, it will take on average 3 months to arrive. Then you'll need to leave time for fittings and alterations. Leave enough time where you aren't stressed that the dress won't make it, but don't leave too much time. Weight can change, style preferences can change, weddings can get postponed or called off. You don't want to get stuck with an un-returnable and un-wearable dress. Don't expect perfection on your wedding day Something will go wrong or at least turn out not how you specified. Don't forget the reason why you are there. Have helpers identified to handle major catastrophes that occur on the wedding day. For small details, most likely only you will notice. Don't change your hair style or color right before the wedding Your image is about to be captured in a zillion photos, now isn't the time to try out that new cut that Vogue claims is the look of the season. It is safer to stick with what you know, than end up with a nightmare that can't be fixed. Do something relaxing for yourself the week before your wedding Escape for a pedicure, massage or facial. Or maybe a hike is more your style. Give yourself a moment away from wedding decisions to just enjoy feeling alive. One more beauty tip - do a test run on your makeup and hair Try out those new makeup colors and unique hairstyle that you have planned for the big day. Does it look good on you? Is that hairdo going to give you a headache? Will it stay up after dancing for 2 hours? Get these questions answered before the real thing. |
