Overall questions you want to ask before obtaining a license

Oregon Marriage Licenses

Washington Marriage Licenses

Idaho Marriage Licenses

You must obtain a marriage license in order for your marriage to be legal in the US. The first step in obtaining a marriage license is to contact either the County Courthouse (someone will direct you to the correct office), the County Auditor or the County/Town Clerk's office for licensing information. Call the county in which you and your fiance will have the actual wedding ceremony.

Marriage license requirements can vary greatly depending on the state or county. When speaking with the county office be sure to cover the following questions:

What are the age requirements?

Do you have to apply for the license in person and together?

Do you need a witness?

How long is the marriage license application valid?

Who has to sign the license?

Are there residency requirements?

What is the fee, and what is the accepted method of payment?

What sort of identification or proof of age must you provide?

Must you provide proof of divorce?

Are AIDS or other health tests required?

Do restrictions exist on whom may perform the ceremony?
