Cannon Beach: A Romantic Honeymoon Get-Away

Beach, Shopping and Activities: Lincoln City on the Oregon Coast

Mt. Hood Honeymoon

ROMANCE

Nothing says romance like the beach. Long walks on sandy shores, candlelit dinners while gazing out at the ocean as the sun sets on the horizon, or snuggled together by the fireplace watching waves crash on the shore as a storm rages. The setting is ripe for love and romance. And no where more than Cannon Beach, Oregon - just 69 miles from Portland, Oregon.

WHERE TO GO & WHAT TO DO

Cannon Beach is nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountain Range. From Portland take Highway 26 west, and then Highway 101 south -- about an hour drive (see map below). With average temperatures ranging from low 40s in the winter to low 70s in the summer, it offers a comfortable climate year-round.

Cannon Beach is an excellent honeymoon for the couple who loves the outdoors. Whether your passion is camping, fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing, beachcombing, horseback riding or biking, it's all within reach. The small town boasts the third largest monolith in the world, Haystack Rock, where active tide pools can be viewed during low tide. And the Oregon Bike Trial runs north to south along Highway 101.

If the outdoors isn't your style, you'll find plenty of other activities. Lining both sides of Hemlock Street (see map below), you will find shops and galleries to intrigue you for hours. Works of local artists are displayed - bronze, pottery, calligraphy and painting. There are plenty of clothing shops with unique and one-of-a-kind outfits. Take in an evening show at the Coaster Theater Playhouse (www.coastertheater.com), one of the finest community theaters in the Northwest. Or you could spend hours wandering through the book store which spotlights local writers.

Cannon Beach was founded as an artist colony, and evidence of many artists' creations are everywhere. Portland Haystack Summer Program for artists makes its home in Cannon Beach.

AND THE DIFFERENCE IS?

What sets Cannon Beach apart from other Northern Oregon Coastal towns is its ambience. The main street has a small town feel, uncluttered by fast food restaurants and billboards, and each shop is unique. Most everything inside town is within walking distance. You can sip lattes on an outside bench, walk your dog, read the paper in a flower filled courtyard, browse the blown glass and sculptures in art galleries, or walk on the pristine sandy beaches.

Unlike its neighboring beaches, it's a little quieter here. Plenty of kite flying, children playing, dog walking and sunbathing, but less volleyball and sand biking.

But if high beach activity is what you want, then hop over to Seaside, just 9 miles north. Other close by attractions are:

Golfing in Manzanita, just south of Cannon Beach, or head north to Seaside, or Gearhart where a 9-hole course runs along the ocean on the back portion of the course.

Kayaking in Warrenton, 24 miles north.

Historical Fort Stevens, 26 miles north.

Saddle Mountain State Park, 15 miles east, and known for its spectacular trail to the top of Saddle Mountain, the highest peak in Clatsop County.

Oswald West State Park has many short trails through scenic rain forests to the beach at Smuggler's Cove and out to rugged Cape Falcon.

Seaside Aquarium.

Seaside Promenade, which is the official end of the Lewis & Clark Trail.

Astoria Column, where you can climb 166 steps to the top and enjoy the panoramic view of ocean, river and mountains.

ACCOMMODATIONS & DINING

Accommodations in Cannon Beach run anywhere from $75 to $469 per night, depending on the time of year you arrive, and whether you stay in a cottage a block or so from the beach, or a panoramic ocean view room in a romantic resort. You can stay in town, over in the Tolovana State Park area, or in several ocean side/view hotels in between. There are also vacation home rentals available. During the busy season from May to September, it's best to book reservations 6-12 months ahead of time.

And what would the coast be without clam chowder and fresh seafood. There are plenty of restaurants to please your palate both inside Cannon Beach and within a short drive. Romantic dinners, fabulous brunches - they're all here or nearby.

THE PERFECT CHOICE

Whatever your taste, Cannon Beach is an excellent choice for your honeymoon. It's a bustling coastal town with lots to do, and places to see - and of course where wonderful memories can be made.
